Which is better: Monthly recurring donations, or a lump sum now?

On the value of sustaining donations vs. one-time: A donor asks: “[My partner] and I decided to donate $2,500 to MVP. Would it be preferable for us to sign up as sustainers at $200/month, and plan to continue that at least through the next year? I suspect that it might help MVP more to have the lump sum now, but I’m not sure. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.” - Martha Golub

From Dana Brooks: I have had the same question for a long time – is there a preference for one-time vs sustaining gifts from the point of view of 1) MVP as an organization, 2) groups receiving funds from MVP ? As in Martha’s question, assume the overall $$ are the same both ways. To make it even more fair, you could even assume that the larger gift is in the middle of the sustainer time period so there is no average “early $$” benefit, if that helps to answer the question, eg if the sustainer gift is over a calendar year, assume the one-time gift would be in June or July.
